The temporary exhibition "Copernicus - Influences" is devoted to the influence of the Toruń astronomer on modern science and society. The title is a reference to the Old French word "influences" meaning the impact of one thing on another, especially the influence of celestial bodies on the course of events on Earth. The exhibition told the story of what happened in Europe after the publication of Copernicus' work "De revolutionibus" in 1543.The event was held under the Honorary Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, and was made possible by funding from the state budget awarded by the Minister of Education and Science under the Program "Social Responsibility of Science II - Popularization of Science." The exhibition closed the program of the Year of Copernicus at the Ossolineum.
Our task was to arrange the exhibition space in accordance with the Client's content scenario. It assumed, among other things, the presentation of more than 80 objects, including a dozen priceless old prints, in a room of about 188 m2 in the historic building of the Ossolineum National Institute on Szewska Street in Wroclaw. On the main axis of this rather narrow and long space, we set up a row of twelve elegant, two-story display cases with individual lighting to allow the objects to be displayed from two sides. Around it, on the side display system, we designed large-format graphic creations using fragments of iconography from the old prints, coins and posters presented at the exhibition.
In developing the visual identity for the exhibition, which featured primarily old prints, we relied on a combination of pastel colors that is quite rarely used in this context. We selected a logotype with an elegant typeface, which corresponds well with the client's logotype and introduces an element of freshness to its existing communication. As a whole, it creates a coherent and modern visual message that refers to the historical context of the exhibition, and above all is clear and attractive to the modern viewer.
We created modern creations using graphic motifs borrowed from objects presented at the exhibition. We adopted for our designs a dozen unique images of Copernicus from coins and old prints, as well as patterns of geometric solar systems. The creations developed on their basis were combined with texts to create twenty boards filling the exhibition space. This resulted in an interesting visual setting for the presented objects, at the same time organizing its space into thematic zones.
The package of promotional materials for the exhibition consists primarily of designs for printing. We prepared poster creations in several formats, an invitation to the opening of the exhibition, and two versions of leaflets (with text in English a leaflet in harmonica layout and with text in Polish in A3 format folded to A5). Specially for the exhibition, we designed a space with a view to serving visitors and presenting promotional materials, where we set up a modern and functional counter with elements of Ossolin and Year of Copernicus identification.
Every cultural event must also be properly presented on social media. For the exhibition, we developed several graphics consistent with the visual identity of the exhibition, but above all aesthetic and eye-catching to the audience. We paid a lot of attention to combining the right amount of text with graphic elements, as well as appropriately labeling information about honorary patrons and sources of funding for the event.
