The end of June 2022 was sealed with a global event. The eleventh edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF 11) took place in Katowice, Poland, which acted as organizer together with the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy and UN-Habitat (ONZ). The event attracts thousands of participants and dozens of exhibitors from around the globe every two years. The World Urban Forum is a place to exchange views on innovative ways to develop cities. At the Urban EXPO exhibition accompanying the conferences, visitors were able to learn about solutions and tools to improve both the quality of urban life and environmental protection.
The Polish Pavilion was an obligatory stop on the WUF 11 tour. It was a place where Polish architecture showed its points of contact with modern design. Commissioned by the Poznań International Fair, we handled the graphic part of the "Urban Transformations" exhibition, which was the result of the Model Urban Revitalization Competition. Under the slogan "We change our cities for a better future," 23 Polish cities were transformed into veritable centers of revitalization and innovation. The exhibition occupied 200 sqm. The exhibition modules arranged in the Pavilion showed on screens the final results of projects to transform urban spaces. Interacting with the exhibition was made possible by placing a touch screen on the introductory board. As they moved along the entire path of the exhibition, visitors could watch, read and engage with the issues presented on the installations....
Our role was to graphically present the most important project information in two languages (Polish and English) and enrich it with thematic illustrations and infographics. The whole project was to resemble an urban zone - we combined the features of the square with elements of nature and architecture. We developed a logical and aesthetically pleasing system of labeling the six subsections of the exhibition so that their order was consistent with the narrative of the exhibition and did not raise any doubts among visitors. The carefully selected lettering is intended to reflect the peculiarity of the city, while at the same time making the visual dimension of the message clear and unified. The lightness of the entire exhibition is guaranteed by a consistent, pattern-creating graphic layer.
We actively participated in the implementation of the visual identity of the exhibition, taking into account not only its substantive content, but also the specifics of the space of the Pavilion, where it was to stand. We drew up a logotype to emphasize and relate to the theme of the event. Based on associations with particular thematic areas, we selected classic shapes in light pastel colors. We designed minimalist graphics that allow the eye to rest from the chaos and hustle and bustle that accompany us every day in the city. Their simplicity creates space to focus on the substantive content of the exhibition. We framed the selected six stages of the tour with distinctive shapes and silhouettes that tell a story about residents and cities. In designing the illustrations, we drew handfuls of color and pattern. Linear, dynamic drawings depict characters as if they were lifelike from a landscape/cityscape/picture. A set of cohesive graphics completes the visual identity of the event and makes it one of a kind.
Cooperation with the Poznań International Fair in arranging Urban Transformations was a success. Among the exhibition's audience of about 20,000 were urban planners, architects, but also people not professionally involved in the creation of urban space. Time pressure did not stand in our way of realizing the aforementioned project. We were able to finalize it in a short period of time, and the result of the work is satisfactory for us, as well as for our client @GrupaMTP.
